Any tips on attending the Cannes Film Festival?

Hi, my wife and I are grad students and we are interested in attending the Cannes Film Festival. We missed the deadline for the student accreditation, since it is a last minute decision to go. We heard that there are mostly private events, so we wanted to know if people have any tips on ways that we can get into some of the screenings, parties, etc. Some ideas that we’ve seen so far: membership to The American Pavilion offers tickets to some screenings and parties (has anyone tried this?), email companies hosting parties and beg to be allowed, enroll in a course that gives access to events, etc. Has anyone tried these or have any other tips?
