Cycling Holidays in Provence – Heading South Easier than Ever for School Group Holidays

Zipping off to the southern reaches of France has become easier for school groups since the advent of daily flights from various airports around the UK to the likes of Lyons, Nimes, Nice and Marseilles.

The sunny and chic but one time elite Riviera is no longer just the preserve of the rich and famous.

While some high falutinâ?? types may bemoan the loss of its exclusivity, most of us celebrate the chance to parade the palm tree promenades of Nice, meander around the side streets of the casino capital Monte Carlo, take an hour or two to go celebrity spotting in Cannes or watch the world pass by in from the quiet of a tree-lined avenue in Aix-en-Provence.

Here, too, is chance to relish the rustic scenes which inspired great artists from Monet and Manet to Picasso and Degas, savour the food and wines which they savoured, take in the rustic scenes which so fired their imaginations, visit the one time â??Papal kingdomâ?? of Avignon.

Museums and art galleries offer a glimpse of great artistic and historic works and a walk around in hillside village trails in the Alpes Maritimes and the Var valley provide an insight as to how the Impressionists found the inspiration to produce such masterpieces.

This is now a region where international businessmen, film moguls and stage and screen celebs come to play, or seal deals while enjoying the comfort of the sun on their backs. Gazing at the rows of gleaming luxury yachts moored in Mediterranean marinas is an activity in itself – one which defies â??credit crunchâ?? headlines. Swish hotels and high priced restaurants are patronised by a designer suited clientelle. Flashy convertibles turn heads as they get caught up in Franceâ??s obligatory town centre traffic jams.

But dinted Renaults and standard model citroens also hold their own in the line. You do not have to â??come from moneyâ?? to enjoy the infinite array of rich vistas here, nor to explore market plazas or village squares, to sit by an ancient sculptured fountain or dip your feet into cool river waters.

This is a holiday spot to be enjoyed by all â?? a delight for school parties, gap-life travellers, or groups of retirees.

For those whose pockets arenâ??t too deep, there are mouth-watering menus aplenty, terrace cafes affording ample opportunity to people watch at leisure, while savouring a mid-morning coffee or chilling out with a glass of wine. Accommodation choices range from family and school group camp sites to self-catering apartments, country gites for rent, and friendly family-run hotels.

High temperatures in summer make it a favourite for annual holidays, and budget airline services have now turned the Cote dâ??Azur, in particular, into a popular destination for weekend breaks.

Cannes, a short hop from Nice airport is centre of the media spotlight every year as it hosts the worldâ??s most famous international film festival. Here you can stroll by the fashion houses and perfumeries of the Promenade La Croisette or catch a glimpse of whoâ??s enjoying nouvelle cuisine at the famous Palme dâ??Or restaurant, visit venues frequented by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman and Catherine Zeta-Jones, pick up film festival memorabilia, take in a movie at a city cinema.

But it is not just Hollywood stars who are attracted to Cannes. Over the years it has been a port of call for artists of all generations – home to Picasso for ten years, a destination favoured by Renoir, Chagall and Matisse. More modern day artists now display their works at the weekly crafts and antiques markets near the town hall a stoneâ??s throw from the old port marina. Tourists can board the quaint â??little trainâ?? for a city tour, discover hidden away historic churches, elegant boulevards, the Palais des Festivals, Palais Croisette, casino plazas and flower markets.

From the marina visitors can take a 15 minute ferry to two unspoiled islands across Cannes Bay – St Marguerite and St Honorat. With their ancient forts, chapels, Roman relics and museum pieces, they offer a green and secluded rest from the more mainstream tourist trail.

It is easy to get about along the southern coast, on foot, on bicycle, by, bus, coach or train.

Frequent local buses and trains offer the options for one, two or three centre trips, to explore vineyards, enjoy the local culture, take part in hiking or cycling holidays â?? or simply to discover secluded beach spots along the coast. Summer or winter, there is a rich choice of those.

Is Nice really cheaper than Cannes?

The guide books all say that Nice is more down-to-earth and that the hotels are cheaper, but Priceline.com says that Cannes has cheaper hotels. Does that just mean that there are more lower quality hotels in Cannes? In your experience, would a $100 hotel be cleaner and more comfortable in Cannes or in Nice?

Nice Better Than Gay Paris

The area’s largest city is Nice, which, contrary to popular opinion, is not a sickly ‘nice’, but a little bit naughty with a pervading tolerant spirit and string of gay hangouts between your Nice holiday apartment and favourite beach.

La Plage de Coco beach is Nice’s gay beach. I say beach, but I mean rocky platform. A second private beach – Plage Castel – is more popular and categorised as gay-friendly, as is its neighbouring public beach. There are at least two further gay beaches just outside Nice including La Plage d’Eze – or simply ‘Eze’.

Eze is a busy, gay, mainly nudist hangout, but you’ll need wheels to get in on the action. If you don’t have a car, or a friend with a car who’ll wait outside your Nice apartment while you check you’ve got your sunglasses, spare sunglasses, lotion, lip balm, drinks, snacks and dips (there’s nothing for miles, or at least a mile), take the bus (the no.100 leaving from outside the main bus station).

You’ll need to go down some steps, take a right across a first beach (not gay), and cross the rocks before you arrive in this tranquil haven of bare beauty – a good ten-minute trot across the pebbles.

Oh, and if you don’t like pebbles, don’t book a holiday apartment in Nice. Or, take a trip to La Plage de La Batterie for some sandy moments. In high summer you’ll be sharing the sand with young families, meaning a lot of children. Ange and Brad have recently been clogging up Nice beach space with their growing clan.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were among those attending the nearby 61st Cannes Film Festival, running May 14 – 25. While this is a strictly invite only affair, Nice has an open door policy on all its festivals – being a popular vacation resort there are quite a few – as well its annual winter-month festival, Nice Carnival, held in February.

Since the arrival of the railway to the French Riviera, hordes of British leisure travellers have spent their summers in Nice accommodation off the Promenade des Anglais. With the advent of budget airlines, Nice became ever more accessible. In recent years the French Riviera including Nice has received increased recognition as a gay destination too.

Nice is the fifth largest city in France, so the scene is smaller compared to the scene in larger European cities. But there are ample gay hotspots both in and around Nice, from beaches to bars and clubs, and there’s plenty of accommodation in Nice aimed solely or principally at the gay community visiting the area. Most if not all of these hotels, B&Bs and Nice apartment rentals have good standards of service, and some are very well situated – close to the beach and main attractions.

For many Nice’s appeal is its vibrancy and energy which is at once relaxing and energising. Founded by the Greeks, who first named it after a shoe (‘Nike’ the Greek goddess of victory), Nice first became a busy trading port, and then later a major tourist centre and backyard for the moneyed folk including Elton John, who splits his time across his Nice villa and other residences. Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with and buy an apartment in Nice too.

Dream homes: Why French Riviera property may be more accessible than you think

The phrase â??French Rivieraâ?? immediately conjures up images of playboy millionaires, expensive yachts and property that has an eight-figure price tag. Although there is a huge amount of wealth and exclusivity to some areas of the region, owning a French Riviera property is not necessarily the exclusive domain of the rich and famous. With a little bit of hunting and a good realtor on your side, there are properties available for a more affordable price-tag, allowing you to invest in a property that is guaranteed to increase in value, no matter what the global markets decide to do.

The name â??French Rivieraâ?? is a misnomer â?? the actual region is the Côte d’Azur and covers the Mediterranean coastline of the southeastern corner of France, extending from Menton near the Italian border on the east to Hyères and Cassis in the west. The English term of â??French Rivieraâ?? originates in its popularity as a health resort for ailing British tourists in the 18th century, who flocked to the region to take advantage of its warm climate. In the later part of the 18th and early 19th centuries the region became popular as a resort for royalty and wealthy visitors, and its popularity amongst the upper echelons of society has remained intact to this day.

Property in the most popular areas of the region is still extremely expensive, but more affordable luxury properties are still available if you are prepared to broaden your search a little. The biggest problem with finding property on the French Riviera is locating realtors who deal in this exclusive marketplace. Those that do know that because of the clientele theyâ??re dealing with discretion is a crucial factor in any property negotiations. As long as you are prepared to consider this as part of your property search and you deal with an experienced Riviera realtor, this should not cause you too much of a problem when buying French Riviera property.

The amount of development that is allowed along the French Riviera is also restricted, which makes property availability limited. However, as low cost air travel has opened the region up to a new type of clientele, developers have spotted a gap in the market and are creating studio and one or two bedroom apartments whereas previously they would have built large luxury apartments. These apartments are more expensive than a similar small house in the Limousin or Gers, but in investment terms they represent excellent value for money.

As with all property investment, location is the key. Whereas property in Cannes is always going to be almost prohibitively expensive, looking towards the outskirts of towns along the coast will often turn up far more affordable properties. The importance of the town to the region can also affect the price of property, with property around the Marseille area being considerably cheaper than that found around Cannes or Nice. Malaussena is the name to watch â?? this area north of Nice was previously regarded as something of a backwater, but improved transportation links have brought this area to the forefront of property development and it is rapidly gaining in popularity. However, affordable properties are still available, particularly one bedroom apartments and studio flats.

The French Riviera will always have an air of exclusivity, but with a little bit of hunting and making sure you have a realtor with local knowledge on your side, affordable French Riviera property is still available.
