Of Men and Gods (des hommes et dieux) – PREVIEW

Purchase: www.der.org A frank look at a largely unexplored area, Of Men And Gods examines the daily existence of several Haitian men who are openly gay. Prevalent, yet still taboo, homosexuality and gay culture are allowed to flourish within the context of Haiti’s Vodou religion. As “children of the gods,” the men find an explanation for homosexuality as well as divine protection. They also find an outlet for theatrical expression through exhilarating performances in which they embody the gods. Meanwhile, the AIDS epidemic looms as a continual threat and adds a disquieting degree of nihilism to their relatively optimistic attitudes toward life and happiness in Port-au-Prince. a film by Anne Lescot and Laurence Magloire distributed by Documentary Educational Resources

There’s also Oliver Stone’s new Wall Street movie which sees Michael Douglas reprise his role as Gordon Gekko, whilst starring alongside Shia LeBeouf and Carey Mulligan. A discerning look at the upcoming big screen slate I’ll skip the diatribe about how the year in movies has been so far. It sucks. Let’s look forward. The second half of the year brings everything from film festival favorites and art house Oscar bait to documentaries and big-budget blockbusters.

www.mannythemovieguy.com 25 Hot Movies You Have to See This Summer MAY X-Men Origins Wolverine (May 1) Any chance to see Hugh Jackman in the role that made him a star is a welcome treat! Star Trek (May 8) The buzz surrounding this reboot is deafening! Director JJ Abrams will satisfy hard-to-please die-hard Trekkies. Angels & Demons (May 15) The scene-stealing but cringe-inducing hairdo sported by Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code is gone! Its now safe to watch the sequel. Terminator Salvation (May 21) Sadly, this fourth Terminator movie is going to be overshadowed by Christian Bales (John Connor) on-set tirade. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (May 22) The first movie was cute, lets hope that the sequel is better. Drag Me to Hell (May 29) Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise) returns to his Evil Dead roots with this horror flick. The scenes I saw at last years Comic Con were enough to recommend this flick. Up (May 29) By now, we know that the Disney and Pixar collaboration can never go wrong. Up is the first animated film to kick-off the Cannes International Film Festival. JUNE The Hangover (June 5) This comic mystery from Old School director Todd Phillips will cure your, dare I say it, hangover. Land of the Lost (June 5) This is a treat for those who grew up with the Sid & Marty Krofft TV show. I saw a sneak peek of the film and yes, the Sleestaks are back to harass Will Ferrell and company. The Taking of Pelham 123 (June 12) Tony Scott, director of this
