The French Riviera ? Where the Rich and Famous Mingle

Known as The French Riviera to English speaking folk, but also known as the Côte d’Azur, it is the Mediterranean corner of France lying on the south east coastline of the country. The coastline is one of the first modern resort areas, first used as a winter health resort for the British upper class around the end of the 18th century.  Then it became the playground for them in the mid-19th century where even Queen Victoria and King Edward VII went there. The trend of the wealthy people visiting the coast continued in the 20th century but also artists and writers became frequent visitors these included Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edith Wharton, Somerset Maugham and Aldous Huxley, to name just a few.  

It was after the second world war that it became a hot tourist spot and convention site. Now many celebrities have homes in this luxurious region, the Côte d’Azur is home to 163 nationalities with 83,962 foreign residents, although estimates of the number of non-French nationals living in the area are often much higher.

The largest city in the Côte d’Azur is Nice, with a population of over 500,000. It is home to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport  – France’s third busiest airport which is on an area of partially reclaimed coastal land at the western end of the Promenade des Anglais.

The French Riviera contains famous seaside resorts such as Cannes and Saint Tropez.  They both need no introduction as both are known worldwide. With these three areas you’re bound to see the most luxurious villas in France

Cannes is most probably well known for its film annual film festival which is a major event for the industry that is held every May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.  It is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world. It is a private event that has been made well known due to Media exposure and the fact that it is attended by many movie stars. Also it is a place where film producers attempt to sell their works to distributors from all over the world.

Saint Tropez is another well-known area blown up thanks to the media.  In the past it was a place for the jet set and “in” crowd known as a place where fashion models go to and films used as a backdrop.  Now although not as often movie stars and other various people do past through or use as a place relax in their privately owned estates away from prying eyes. The beaches are one of the main reasons why people go there though with their beautiful golden sand and deep blue oceans.  Also add to the fact that a few of them are privately owned helps with a reason why people go there.

Another part of the French Riviera is just as glamorous as the those two areas and that is Monaco this place holds the most talked about Gran Pix race the Monaco Gran Prix One of the few street circuits in the racing calendar it consists of the city streets from Monte Carlo and La Condamine that has the famous harbour in the backdrop.  This circuit is considered the ultimate test of driving skills in Formula One.

The French Riviera has always been associated with the fabulous life and maybe you want to experience it laying out on the beach of St Tropez or sampling one of the world’s biggest motorsport. At the end of the day it’s all about your enjoyment why not just add a touch of class to you vacation.
