IGNOU Silver Jubilee Lecture by Ms. Nandita Das (2010) on Identity and the Notion of the Other. The question of identity in a globalised world is fraught with personal, societal and political complexities. And in a country like India, identity impinges upon the individual vis-à-vis various divisions, sub divisions and hierarchical notions of religion, language, region, caste, class, occupation etc. The concept of them and us has frequently polarised groups and formulated public opinion. Firaaq, Ms. Nandita Das directorial debut film, in many ways was an outcome of her varied experiences both as an activist and an artiste. The lecture, primarily from an experiential perspective, focus upon the increase of identity politics in the country at all three levels and the threat it poses to an inherently pluralistic society. Nandita Das has won national and international accolades for acting as well as for her maiden directorial venture, Firaaq. With a Masters Degree in Social Work, she is deeply committed to human rights issues, has worked actively with NGOs in the field and been featured as a speaker advocating social justice at various universities and other forums in India and abroad. She has been conferred the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Identity and the Notion of the Other Previous Lectures in the Series Government and has been on the jury of international Film Festivals at Cannes, Karlovy Vary and Marrakech.
